Success Strategy 5: Achieving Goals

Now that you have written down your goals in all of the seven key life areas, it is time to make a plan for achieving those goals. The way to do this is to make them specific and measurable. Choose the goals that you want to work on first. I like to use the project planning method. It helps me see the big picture while breaking goals into small steps.

These are the steps that I have found useful:

  1. Take a sheet of paper and write the goal at the top. Clearly define when you will achieve the goal and what you will measure. Word all statements in the positive.
  2. Next, list the strategies for achieving your goal. These are statements with verbs that show action toward your goal.
  3. Now make a grid with four columns. Write down your action steps first. After each action step write down the due date. In the next column write down who can help you achieve that task, whether it is by delegating, asking for support, or asking for contacts. Your final column is to check off when you finish each task.
  4. Remember to break down your goal into much smaller, manageable tasks. This is key to achieving goals.

Use any type of goal setting format that works for you. A notebook, journal, your computer; there is even software that can track your goals.

Another success strategy for achieving goals is to have an accountability partner, or partners. Form a small group of supportive people who you can turn to for motivation for keeping you on track.

You must keep moving forward. Without action there will be no success. Remember, you must take focused action. Zoom in those binoculars. Work on your most important tasks.

Keep focused on your goal

Now, each evening you will make your "to do" list from your project plan sheet. All your activities should be focused on moving forward with the steps from your plan. Making your "to do" list each evening allows your mind to start working on how to accomplish your tasks the next day.

This is also a great way to manage your energy. You will awake with a clear sense of purpose in the morning, and go to sleep at night feeling you have accomplished something that is important to you.

As you work on your "to do" list, focus on the 20% of the tasks that will account for 80% of the value you will gain toward achieving your goals. This is the 80/20 rule. Most people spend too much time on the easier, low value tasks.

You must tackle those most difficult tasks first that will move you toward achieving your goals.

Review your goals daily. Have them written down on cards as if they have already happened and carry them with you. This simple strategy will help keep you on track toward achieving your goals.
